Mauka to Makai
Our resort is committed to working towards a more sustainable future by protecting and preserving Maui’s finite natural resources from mauka (the mountains) to makai (the ocean). Through our Community Footprint efforts, we have established the Mauka to Makai Preservation of Place Project benefitting two local non-profits.
MauKA
The Pu‘u Kukui Watershed
- Largest private nature preserve in the state of Hawai‘i
- Extending across more than 9,000 acres from mauka to makai of Mauna Kahālāwai on Maui’s West side
- Home to some of the rarest endangered flora and fauna in the islands
- Vital water source for Maui’s community and one of the wettest spots on earth
How do your contributions help?
- Conservation and sustainability of our rain forest
- Trail clearing, stream maintenance, alien flora and tree eradication, replanting native species, community education and participation
MaKAI
Hui O Wa‘a Kaulua
- Maui’s double hulled voyaging canoe organization
- Mo‘okiha O Pi‘ilani (Long Distance Sailing Canoe) and Mo’olele
(Interisland, shoreline sailing canoe) - Teaching the values of the ocean to high schools via their “Jr.
Voyagers Program” - Formed in 1975 on the island of Maui to practice, perpetuate and educate the community on Hawaiian canoe building, wayfinding and voyaging arts
